Advanced Education Research Methods
This course provides students with advanced knowledge and practical skills in educational research methodology. It introduces the philosophical and epistemological foundations of research, the major quantitative, qualitative, mixed methods, and design and development research approaches, and the principles that guide ethical and professional research practice. Across the course, students learn how to plan a research study, develop research problems and frameworks, analyze and synthesize literature, select appropriate designs and sampling techniques, choose suitable data collection instruments, determine relevant data analysis techniques, and interpret and report findings systematically. The course learning outcomes emphasize designing relevant research concepts, theories, models, and methods; justifying the use of theory, literature review, design, and sampling; determining suitable data analysis techniques; and critically evaluating research proposals.
The course is organized into 14 topics that move from foundational issues, such as philosophy in research and research epistemology, to more applied topics, including educational research planning, literature review, research designs, sampling, data collection, data analysis, interpretation, proposal writing, proposal presentation, and peer evaluation. The pro forma shows that the course is delivered through lectures, discussion, article review, academic writing, presentations, and peer evaluation, while the formal assessment structure consists of Academic Writing (30%), Presentation (30%), Academic Writing (30%), and Peer Evaluation (10%).
The supporting materials you uploaded are fully consistent with this structure. For example, the philosophy materials explain scientific inquiry, ontology, epistemology, research paradigms, and the relationship among methodology, approach, design, and methods, which are central to the early part of the course. Overall, the course is designed to help students build a strong methodological foundation and produce well-justified, academically rigorous research proposals in education.
